As part of the Year of Equity programming, this panel brings together organizers, activists, and healthcare providers from national organizations red states to discuss challenges, approaches, and perspectives in advancing reproductive justice. Centering on the experiences and leadership of women, trans, and non-binary people of color, this panel will present latest community research, initiatives, and advocacy on reproductive justice.

Dr. Jeffrey Mantz will go through the basics of NSF applications, talk about specific programs, and give some general grant writing advice. Mantz is Program Director in Cultural Anthropology and Human Subjects Research Officer at the National Science Foundation, where he has served since 2012. He holds a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Chicago and has previously taught at George Mason University, Cornell University, California State University at Stanislaus, and Vassar College. His own research takes him to the Caribbean and Central Africa, where he explores issues related to inequality, resource extraction, and commodity supply chains.

Connecting with people from around the world is much easier now than it has ever been before. With the internet, phones, and fast travel, we can build relationships and networks in new ways - breaking through the barriers of national boundaries. This development of relationships and their influence despite national borders is known as transnationalism, a social phenomenon that we will be focusing on throughout a four part series.
Every spring the Committee on Social Theory offers the team-taught seminar—always with four professors. Previous course themes/names for the seminar have included “Law, Sex, and Family” “Autobiography,” and “Security.” But previous seminars may not have spoken so directly to the professors’ personal backgrounds as “Transnational Lives” does with this team of four.
Professor of Sociology and Principal Investigator on the Research in Anthropology and Sociology of Health (RASH) programme in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology, University of the Western Cape (UWC), and Senior Research Fellow at the South African Herbal Sciences and Medicine Institute (SAHSMI), UWC. Currently a Visiting Professor of Sociology at UK.
His research area of interest is on epistemological issues in biomedical and African healing practices with specific focus on the social processes and cultural context of clinical trials of African herbal medicines. He is a principal co-ordinator of the PEPFAR-CDC-UWC project on Capacity building for traditional healers in dealing with HIV/AIDS. He is the Managing Editor of African Sociological Review, an international peer review journal of the Council for the Development of Economic and Social Research in Africa (CODESRIA). While at UK he is writing a book on the Ethics and Philosophy in the making of an African medicine.
