Bluegrass Annual Discussions on Anthropology and Social Sciences

WE ARE NOW ACCEPTING ABSTRACTS AND POSTER PRESENTATIONS! JOIN US FOR THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE THAT PROMOTES DISCUSSIONS ON TOPICS IN ANTHROPOLOGY AND THE SOCIAL SCIENCES.

Students at the University of Kentucky have organized the second Bluegrass Annual Discussions on Anthropology and Social Sciences. This year’s topic will focus on “environment.” This can include presentations that focus on pressing issues such as climate change and human impacts on biodiversity and natural resources but can also encompass digital, cultural, linguistic, familial, and other environments as well. We are soliciting presentations from a wide range of fields (anthropology, sociology, geography, political sciences, gender and women’s studies, etc.) and topics, including but not limited to foodways, multi-species interactions, feminist workplace issues, stable isotope analysis, ontogeny, environmental justice, and traditional environmental knowledge. 

Thanks to our sponsors (CRAI, Waypoint, LLC) and funding through the University of Kentucky Student Sustainability Council, registration is free and lunch and coffee with pastries will be provided. The conference will feature 15-minute presentations, a poster session, and a keynote presentation by Professor Sharyn R. Jones from Northern Kentucky University.

Where: The conference will be held at the University of Kentucky in Lafferty Hall, Rm. 203

Unofficial Schedule:

9:00 - 11:30: Opening remarks / Session 1 presentations

11:30 - 12:30: Lunch & poster session

12:30 - 3:00: Session 2 presentations

3:00 - 4:00: Roundtable discussion - topic TBD

4:00 - 5:30: Keynote lecture/ Q&A session with Dr. Sharyn Jones 

7:30: Afterparty (102 Wabash Dr. Lexington, KY 40503)

Abstract Submissions:

Please submit all abstracts no later than Wednesday, October 25th. Abstracts can be submitted via Email to lbo265@uky.edu and/or Michael.steenken@uky.edu

There are two forms of contributions: 

1. Podium Presentation - These presentations should be 15-minutes (PowerPoint format). A 5-minute question and answer session will follow each presentation. 

In your submission document, please include:

  • Presenters Name (first, last, suffix, and preferred pronouns)
  • Contributors (first, last) 
  • Title of the project
  • Abstract 

2. Poster Presentation - The poster session will take place during the mid-day break/lunch period for roughly an hour. Printing is the responsibility of the presenter or group. 

In your submission document, please include:

  • Presenters Name (first, last, suffix, and preferred pronouns)
  • Contributors (first, last) 
  • Title of the project
  • Abstract/ Summary
