Franklin County Tobacco Barns
The most common agricultural building type encountered in the Franklin County survey is the burley air-cured tobacco barn. The typical form is a gable-front, center aisled barn. Posts and rails are set to hang tobacco, which is hung upon 4 foot stakes. The barn is usually augmented with a stripping room, either attached or free-standing, where the tobacco is processed for hanging and later pressed into bales for shipping. Since the tobacco buyout, many barns have seen less use, and although they remain common fixtures of the landscape, their numbers are steadily declining.
