Types of Farming

Farm sizes in Kentucky have fluctuated over the years, as trends in agriculture and economic conditions have influenced production and output. Currently, the Bluegrass has around 85,000 farms. The average Kentucky farm is 164 acres. In antebellum Kentucky, farms were much smaller. Though the eminient historian Thomas Clark asserts that the basic rural pattern in Kentucky was of “farmers who owned from 50 to 200 acres of land” the actual pattern is slightly smaller. Data from the 1860 census for Kentucky farm sizes points to a range of 20-100 acres as the average farm size. [1]
