The University of Kentucky College of Arts and Sciences has named Shaunna Scott as the new director of its Appalachian Studies Program and Christopher Barton as the new director of the Appalachian Center.

WE WILL RESCHEDULE AND POST UPDATES WHEN PLANS ARE FINALIZED*** The University of Kentucky Graduate Appalachian Research Community presents the 6th Annual UK Appalachian Research Community Symposium and Arts Showcase on Saturday, March 7, 2015 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the William T. Young Library. This year's keynote speaker is Lisa Conley, Ph.D. Her research interests focus on foodways, environmental sustainability, and local food politics in motivating the self-provisioning practices of people in rural and urban Kentucky. The UK Appalachian Center welcomes Dr. Rebecca Klenk from the University of Tennessee Knoxville. She will be giving a talk entitled Global Uttarakhand: Development, Neoliberalism and Social Justice in Himalayan India as a part of our Appalachian Forum Series on Civil Rights, Labor and Environmental Social Movements in Appalachia. Her talk will be held in the Niles Gallery from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Monday, March 9, 2015. A reception will follow at the UK Appalachian Center from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Please, join in the fun at the Lexington Old-Time Music Gathering in Lexington, KY! This event spans February 12, 2015 through February 15, 2015 and has something for everyone. This is an opportunity for community engagement, learning about traditional mountain music, and hearing artists perform. During the Saturday, 2/14/15 event, there will be fun for all ages at the Appalachian Youth Day portion of the event from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission for the Youth Day is free, and there will be workshops, open mic, jam sessions, singing, and dances! (Please note that a parent must accompany children at all times.) The UK Appalachian Center is proud to host Helen Rosko, MS Candidate from the University of Tennessee--Knoxville. Ms. Rosko's talk is entitled, "Placing Modern Moonshine in America: Exploring Appalachia’s Role." This is part of the Appalachian Center's SWAP (Sharing Work on Appalachia in Progress) series and will be held at the UK Appalachian Center on Friday, February 13, 2015 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. This is a free event for UK Students, Staff, and Faculty.
The James S. Brown Award is given to honor the memory of Professor James S. Brown, a sociologist on the faculty of the University of Kentucky from 1946 to 1982, whose pioneering studies of society, demography, and migration in Appalachia (including his ethnography of “Beech Creek”) helped to establish the field of Appalachian Studies at U.K. and beyond.
